Guided Self Practice

Mysore Style - Guided Self Practice Mysore Style is a traditional method of learning yoga through individual guidance within a shared practice space. Rather than following a led class, each student develops a personal practice at their own pace, receiving one-to-one instruction and hands-on support from the teacher. My approach begins with the established sequences of Ashtanga Yoga, which provide a structured framework for developing strength, mobility, concentration, and breath awareness. Students gradually learn and memorise the sequence, building confidence and independence over time. While I deeply respect the Ashtanga tradition, my teaching is intentionally unorthodox. I don’t believe that one fixed sequence is the destination for every practitioner. Instead, I see the classical series as a foundation from which a lifelong, intelligent practice can evolve. As students gain experience, they are encouraged to thoughtfully integrate elements from Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Krama, restorative practices, pranayama, and other complementary methods where appropriate. The aim is not simply to perform a prescribed sequence, but to cultivate a sustainable, responsive practice that honours the changing needs of the body, mind, and circumstances of daily life. This approach is informed by more than two decades of practice and study with teachers from both the Ashtanga and Iyengar traditions, strength training, and movement disciplines. The emphasis is always on precision, awareness, curiosity, and adaptability rather than rigid adherence to form. Whether you are completely new to yoga or an experienced practitioner, Mysore Style offers the opportunity to develop a deeply personal practice - one that grows with you rather than asking you to fit into a fixed mould.

Ashtanga Sanskrit counted classes are traditional classes that follow the Ashtanga Yoga method, using Sanskrit count to lead students through a set sequence of postures. In these classes, the teacher recites the Sanskrit vinyasa count, a numerical and verbal guide that links breath with movement, rather than offering detailed alignment cues or modifications. This structured approach helps practitioners develop a rhythmic flow, maintain focus, and internalize the specific number of breaths and movements within the Ashtanga sequence. The pace of a counted class is usually consistent, so it can feel challenging, especially for beginners or those not accustomed to the method, but it can also deepen one’s practice by building mental focus, discipline, and physical endurance. The use of Sanskrit in counted classes provides a connection to the roots of Ashtanga Yoga, honoring its cultural and spiritual heritage. Hearing and repeating the vinyasa count allows students to become familiar with traditional terms, fostering a more immersive experience that aligns them with Ashtanga’s lineage. Counted classes are often reserved for more experienced students or those familiar with the sequence, as they require a solid foundation and knowledge of the practice. By regularly attending these classes, students refine their understanding of the Ashtanga series, improve their breath control, and deepen their connection to the method, creating a powerful moving meditation that cultivates both mental clarity and physical strength.

6 Week Course

📅 7 Sep 2026
📍 YO30 6DX

Suitable for all levels of experience, our six-week introductory course takes inspiration from the classical traditions of Hatha, Iyengar and Ashtanga Yoga, presenting them in an accessible, supportive and engaging way. Whether you are completely new to yoga or returning to practice after some time away, this course provides the knowledge and confidence to build a sustainable practice from the ground up. Over six weekly sessions, we will explore the fundamental postures, breathing techniques and principles of alignment that underpin a safe and effective yoga practice. Each class builds progressively on the previous week, allowing you to develop strength, mobility and body awareness at a comfortable pace while gaining a deeper understanding of why we practise in the way that we do. Rather than simply learning a sequence of postures, you’ll discover how breath, movement and mindful attention work together to create a balanced practice. Drawing on the precision of Iyengar Yoga, the structure of Ashtanga and the broader philosophy of Hatha Yoga, the course lays a solid foundation for any future path you choose to follow, whether that is attending regular classes, developing a home practice or progressing into Mysore-style self-practice.
