London Social & Cultural Meetups

Sat
📅 13 Jun 2026
📍 W1G 8NG

Welcome! We like to bring together like-minded people on social and cultural events. Giselle & Michelle run this group for people who enjoy walks (not hikes), museums, galleries, cinema, theatre, comedy, day trips, cultural festivals, and all sorts of similar things. We particularly like movies, photography, history and odd corners of London. We usually go to a pub or cafe at the end of each meetup so we can catch up and chat. If you want to see something specific, please contact us. (Please don’t post suggestions in the discussions area). There is no membership fee, instead we ask for a small pay-on-arrival amount in Cash per meetup to go towards the fee we pay to Meetup for running the group. We follow a '2 No-shows and out' policy to encourage people to change their RSVP if unable to make it (guests also count). A No-show is not turning up or only changing an RSVP to Not Going in the 8 hours prior. Please be thoughtful towards the people on the waiting list – they need a bit of notice to be able to attend. Thank you. Neither of the organisers of this group are responsible for your safety or the safety of your belongings whilst attending any of our meetups. All members must look after themselves on all the group's events. Welcome to London Social & Cultural Meetups Michelle & Giselle PS: You can now also find us on Facebook: 'London Social and Cultural Meetups'

The sessions follow a relaxed and natural flow, with simple materials, soft atmosphere and room to just breathe for a while. Open to everyone — beginners, overthinkers, quiet people, curious people and anyone looking for a softer and more human way to connect locally. Drawing on vivid examples and clips, film historian Professor Stella Bruzzi FBA, award-winning playwright Inua Ellams, and British Academy-funded researcher Dr Rob Lawson will examine different portrayals of masculinity, how cultural representations have evolved over time and what stories we need to tell to help boys and men flourish in a changing world."

DEGAS 📸🩰 Focus Point(e): Impressionist Photography DPL is happy to bring back a favoured DPL workshop–DEGAS! This time, however, we will focus less on the theatrics to create the famous Degas imagery and more on camera techniques to capture an Impressionist image. Our last two workshops have explored capturing dance in movement. This time it is YOU the photographer who will be doing the moving, playing with panning and zooming on a (mostly) still body. Take a look at some of the images we managed to capture at previous Degas workshops. What might you do differently to create the effect of Impressionism? Using slightly different techniques we will explore: ◼️ Intentional Camera Movement ◼️ Various Focus Techniques ◼️ Capturing Texture This whorkshop will be led by Michelle Buckley (professional dancer & co-founder/director of DPL) and Nick Gregan (professional photographer & author). Together, we will guide you through this specially curated workshop, using the specific techniques to create Impressionist Photography. THE BREAKDOWN: ◼️ FEE: £75 (LINK TO PAY HERE) Payment MUST be made before event ◼️ WHO: Michelle Buckley, Nick Gregan ◼️ WHAT: Ballet (classical/neoclassical) ◼️ WHERE: South Wimbledon Community Centre (nearest stations–Haydons Rd & Wimbledon; parking is available) ◼️ WHEN: 25 April 13:30-15:30 WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING: Your camera and creativity! 📍 E2 8JD

``` Folklore: the creative expression, traditions, beliefs, customs, and stories of a community. Have you ever wondered why the bells of St Clements church sing about fruit or known why you would keep bees and honey in a rattle and tank? Have you ever had a picnic on a plague pit, done a spring clean or kissed someone under the mistletoe? Could you escape the Highgate Vampire… or even more ominous, the Muffin Man? Beneath your feet and in the city around you, hidden in plain sight, London is a folklore hotspot for those who know where to look. Some with ancient roots dating back to pre-Christian Britain and some with origins recent enough to take the Piccadilly line. Some so obscure that only locals have heard of them and some so famous that they’re sung about throughout the world. Whether you want to explore how folk customs have shaped our world view and culture today, add a new layer to your knowledge of the city, or just love the mysterious, colourful, spooky or odd-this is the group for you. Our interests include: London, multiculturalism, history, mythology, legend, tradition, superstition, stories, fairytales, nursery rhymes, latrinalia, plantlore, urban legends, magic, ghosts, hauntings, architecture, pubs, churches, cemeteries, art, theatre, language, slang, music, temples, walks, fantasy, tall tales, nature, galleries, museums, rituals, poetry, fables, lullabies, crafts, film, curses, seasons, agriculture, literature, culture, vernacular, farming, dance, food, clothing Disclaimer: We are not professional folklorists, academics, historians or tour guides! Only enthusiastic amateurs. This group is made to bring people together to attend events and places of folkloric interest. All are welcome! ``` ``` ```
