A11y North

All agesThu
📅 30 Apr 2026
📍 NE6 1AB

For the first time since its inception in 2024, A11y North is heading even further north for an evening of digital accessibility talks and networking. We're delighted to be joined by Rob Lavender (Senior Technology Delivery Lead, Opencast), whose talk titled "Radical Honesty: A Non-Expert’s Guide to Fixing What’s Broken" will set the scene for the evening. In this refreshingly honest talk, Rob ditches the jargon to focus on the power of being a 'useful amateur.' He’ll show you why 'good enough' is often the most radical act of inclusion, how to use your voice to call out what’s not working, and why the best way to move the needle is through simple, gritty collaboration. Rob has 11-years experience developing frontend digital services for UK Government departments, advocating for an accessibility first mindset. We'll also be joined by Catherine McGowan from the NHS Business Services Authority, who will be talking about the accessibility challenges of documents. Catherine will cover how to fix some of the most common accessibility errors in both Word and PDFs, as well as discussing why fixing the source document and saving correctly can make the PDF remediation process easier. Agenda: 6:00 - Introduction 6:15 - Radical Honesty: A Non-Expert’s Guide to Fixing What’s Broken 7:00 - Pizza break 7:15 - Common document accessibility issues and fixes 8:00 - Wrap up Accessibility: Please let us know if you have any accessibility or dietary requirements. You can do so by messaging A11y North through this page, emailing or speaking to any of the crew on the night. Logistics: Exact Location via what3words: ///device.normal.cheese Free parking is available, but attendees must enter their car registration into the touchscreen at the front desk.

Leeds Sharp – A .NET User Group

18+Thu
📅 30 Apr 2026
📍 LS1 2DR

LeedsSharp are proud to present Rendle.dev in "How I tamed Claude" PLEASE NOTE WE ARE MEETING AT A NEW VENUE!! Access Details Please go to the Enablis offices, they are on the first floor of the building, both front door and office doors should be open. If there is a problem then press the buzzer. We will meet at 6pm for pizza and drinks, the talks will start at 7. Some of us go to the either the editors draft pub afterwards at 8pm (vote to be taken). Abstract: I work on a lot of different software projects, professionally and for fun, and I often find myself working on several different things at the same time. To do this, I've developed a process for working with coding agents, particularly Claude Code, which allows me to switch context rapidly and do things I don't 100% know how to do myself. In this talk I'll share the techniques I've learned, developed and refined that help me get solid, usable code that I can put into production with confidence. I'll show you how to write a detailed requirements document that an agent can work from; how to work through those requirements step by step in collaboration with your LLM; how to maintain state between sessions (which is helpful for me as well as Claude); and how to keep up with what it's doing so you can take responsibility for the solution long after its context window has closed forever. I'll also share some thoughts about where junior developers fit into this new way of working, and how important it is that humans continue to be the primary agents in software engineering. Bio: Hi, I’m Rendle. I build software of all kinds: back-end, front-end, desktop, mobile, games, CLI tools, whatever. I mostly use C# and .NET but I can do stuff in JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, Rust, Zig, Kotlin, Python… pretty much anything. I like to talk about building software, sometimes seriously, but often more weird and fun. I do consulting and teach workshops on things like improving application performance, migrating from the old .NET

This group is designed for professionals in Leeds and the surrounding areas who would like to socialise, meet new people, make friends, try new things, build networks & most importantly have fun!  Whether you are new to the City, passing through or Leeds born and bred, you are welcome to join us! I would ask if you could ensure you have a profile picture that shows your face so we can recognise you at events. Please no emoji, places or anything other than your face. RSVPing: Everyone is welcome to all events, Although some may be limited depending on the logistics of the event.  If you can go put attending, if you can’t then don’t respond or put not attending. Simple.  If you no show a limited attendance event without warning you will be at risk of being banned from the group for fairness. A lot of effort is put into organising events & we often need to communicate numbers to venues beforehand. Organisers may get in touch with you via meetup messages or event chat messaging to confirm attendance and consolidate rsvp's. If you consistently do not engage and then no show this can lead to removal from the group. We are therefore going by the rule, 3 no shows and you will be banned from the group for 1 month. Any further no shows after that will be 2 months etc. If you no show or drop out 12 hours before a limited event that required a booking, you will receive 2 Strikes straight up. LSP has a WhatsApp and if you are removed, you will be removed for there too. Please also note that advertising or promoting other meetup groups in the WhatsApp will not be permitted and such messages will be deleted. Membership fee: There are currently no membership fee. That may change if the group grows to a certain size. There may however be a small voluntary £1 charge per event in order to cover hosting costs (this shit ain’t free!) and to put back into the group for reservation costs, prizes, an Xmas party etc. This is non refundable. You can bring cash on the day and give to the host if you can’t pay before the event. Environment: We want this group to be a fun, welcoming environment where everyone can be themselves.  Any type of aggressive behaviour/ harassment/ discrimination etc at an event will result in banishment from the group. Nobody should feel too uncomfortable to come to an event. Please drop the leadership team a message if you have experienced any of the above.
