Dance has no chains
We mapped 1,125 grassroots dance classes across the UK, in 218 towns and cities. Almost none of them belong to a chain.
- 723 distinct dance schools
- 98% operate in just one town
- 2 brands that scale nationally — both for under-5s
- 179 distinct schools in London alone
As of June 2026 — a point-in-time snapshot of the listings we aggregate. Figures exclude leisure-centre feeds and Zumba / cardio-dance fitness classes, and are not live-updated.
A cottage industry, not a chain business
Across 1,125 listings we found 723 separate schools — barely more than one class listed per school. 683 of 694 multi-class dance schools operate in a single town. Only two scale across the country — Tiny Tunes and Tiny Toes Ballet, both aimed at toddlers.
One deep hub, a long tail of one-school towns
London holds 179 distinct schools. We rank cities by the number of different schools, never raw listings. Top hubs: London 179, Leeds 27, Manchester 24, Birmingham 20, South Lanarkshire 20, Glasgow 15, North Lanarkshire 12, Cheshire West & Chester 11, Edinburgh 10, Fife 10.
How we counted
Sample: 1,125 active dance listings in the SeshDesk directory (activity type "Dance", live status, leisure-centre feed excluded). Window: snapshot, June 2026. Geography: 1,089 listings carry a town; 1,100 carry coordinates. Schools: counted via normalised brand name (1,118 listings, 723 distinct). Sources: Bookwhen, marketplace feeds, OpenSessions, Hoop, GoTeamUp, Meetup. Exclusions: Zumba / cardio-dance fitness classes are a separate category and are not counted here. Known bias: Bookwhen concentrates in a small number of towns, so we rank cities by distinct schools, never by listing volume.
