Football starts before school does

We looked at 898 grassroots football listings across the UK, in 220 towns and cities. The age they are aimed at is not the age you would expect.

91% of grassroots football listings are aimed at children starting at age 7 or under. More than half (over 50%) are aimed at children starting at age four or younger.

The youngest age each session is aimed at

  • Toddler (starts age 2 or under): 30%
  • Preschool (starts age 3–4): 26%
  • Early primary (starts age 5–7): 35%
  • Late primary (starts age 8–11): 5%
  • Teen and over (starts age 12+): 4%

Base: 711 listings that publish an age range. 91% start at age 7 or under; only 9% are aimed at children starting at 8 or older.

The pattern holds across 132+ different providers

On our broadest single data source (669 listings, 654 with age data, from 132+ distinct providers): 93% start by age 7, and 57% start by age 4.

Methodology

Based on 898 active grassroots football listings in the SeshDesk directory, across 220 UK towns and cities, as of June 2026. Age figures use the 711 listings that publish an age range; the youngest age in each range classifies its entry point. The robustness check uses the single largest, most operator-diverse source (669 listings, 654 with age data, 132+ distinct providers).

Limitations: age ranges are as-advertised by the provider, not independently verified. Coverage varies by area and is densest in large cities, so this describes the listed market, not a national census. We do not publish a city league table because listing counts reflect data coverage, not real provision.
