Mbira Music – instrumental and singing from Zimbabwe

Tue
📅 23 Jun 2026
📍 BN1 3AJ

A six week workshop series introducing Mbira Dzavadzimu, a traditional Zimbabwean instrument rooted in the spiritual and musical culture of the Shona people. Led by Zimbabwean Mbira master Linos Wengara Magaya and joined by long-term fellow musician Tim Lloyd. Often called a “thumb piano”, the mbira is a far more complex and expressive instrument than this name suggests, built around interlocking parts, cyclical patterns, and layered rhythms. Group singing and call-and-response are central, creating an inclusive, social way of learning. Drop in's welcome

Welcome to our Beginner Group Singing Lessons Meetup Group! Have you thought about singing lessons for a long time but always felt a bit scared to take the plunge? Does 1:1 feel too much for you right now, but maybe a choir isn't what you're looking for, either? Maybe you think you can't sing, so think it isn't for you? (It IS for you! If you want to sing, I want you to, too!) Do you want to explore how to sing well, in a fun class with a friendly and experienced teacher? Join us! I run two different types of class in Rottingdean: 1\. Tuesdays \(term time\)\. Sing lots of different songs from various genres, chosen by class members. Some work on how to sing, and singing in harmony. No pressure, no performances. 2\. One Saturday per month \(not August\) Voice Exploration Group This is likely to be hugely helpful in freeing the voice, as well as therapeutic. We look at how the body, breath and voice are connected, do some work on singing technique, singing in unison and harmony, moving the body, exploring vocal noises and experimenting with free vocal expression. The beautiful sounds that fill the room when everyone is following their own voice whilst making sound together can be really moving. Whether you're new to singing, wanting a group to sing songs with without pressure, looking to learn more about technique, or somewhere to express what's inside you with your voice, both of these options will help you to feel more confident in singing well, and have fun in the process!
