##OVERVIEW This mountain navigation course provides a hands-on introduction to essential navigation skills for outdoor and mountainous terrain. You’ll learn practical map reading, compass use, and route planning to navigate confidently in hills, moorland, and mountains. The course emphasises real-world application in a controlled environment, ensuring you develop the skills to find your way safely and independently. ​##COURSE OUTLINE -Theory Session -Map choices, legend, scales and symbols -Understanding the Map -Features, contours & topography and grid references -Map Reading Skills -Orientating the map, feature association, recognising prominent landmarks, -Orienteering and Journey Planning -Measuring distances and forming solid strategies, relaying information from map to ground with pacing and timing -Compass Basics -Anatomy of the compass, its features and basic usage -Practical Navigation Exercises -Participants practice their navigation skills in a controlled outdoor setting with an emphasis on using maps, compasses, and orienteering techniques appropriate to the terrain travelled -Intro to GPS -Looking at appropriate apps and technology, whats recommended and what should be avoided ​ ##SKILLS COVERED -Choosing a map and map types -Grid references -Orientating the map -4 D's of navigation -Measuring distances -Timings -Navigating via linear features such as paths, walls and streams -Developing hand railing techniques -Basic contour interpretation​ -Intro to GPS

ML Refresher – 2 Day Assessment Prep: with wild camp & night nav

###COURSE OUTLINE This workshops offers two days in the mountains and covers all syllabus aspects of the ML. We will head out for an overnight camp and complete a mini expedition. (The only thing we don't cover is rope work, but we do have a workshop to cover this and it is not possible in the timeframe of the course) ###SKILLS COVERED -Understand aims and objectives for the expedition -Leadership in the scheme – vision, support, challenge -Coaching and broadening of knowledge towards navigation -Demonstrating the ML standard -Working towards blind legs & relocation techniques -All Camp craft skills needed for a comfortable night on assessment -Leadership at camp – nutrition, stoves and equipment -Night navigation exercise -Different scale maps and navigation on 1:40,000 -Environment and background knowledge -All round syllabus points – candidate led discussions -Debriefs, goal setting and individual feedback ###WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS Workshop provider: Sam Marsland (WMCI & ML course director) ###WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE EVENT Your CPD record - If you attend this event and it counts as CPD, your CPD point/s will automatically be added to your record in due course - you will not need to add it yourself.
