Last but not least, the great Kinder Scout, our very own Peak District Mountain, 636m at it's highest point and the No 1 Ethel in both height and prominence and for us our journey's end. A great series of walks supported by some dedicated followers as well as occasional visitors. All good. Ethel Haythornthwaite was a determined and skilled advocate for the creation of a Peak District National Park in the 1930’s and 1940’s such that it may never have happened without her. During COVID lockdowns, a local Sheffield man had the idea of recognising this by creating a new classification of Peak District hills equivalent to Scotland's Munro's or the Lake Districts Wainwrights which he called Ethels. These are designated by height and prominence with just 20 having a prominence of 100m or more. This series of walks aim to visit all of these over the coming months starting with the smallest but in such a way that will make them accessible and enjoyable to all. Very difficult to do justice to Kinder in just a single walk but we shall try. Up Grindsbrook Clough which requires use of hands as well as feet. Right across the Kinder Scout plateau to the Kinder Downfall, back to Kinder Low, one of the 3 Kinder Trig Points and then down via Jacobs Ladder and Upper Booth back to the start for celebratory drinks at the Ramblers Inn. We'll deserve it! Do bring plenty of snacks and drinks and a lunch packup as unlikely we shall find somewhere for these on our route. Please take LOTS of pictures and upload them to this Meetup page so everyone can see how much fun you had. Well behaved dogs are welcome but must be put on a lead near to livestock and should not bark or jump up incessantly. Lift sharing is strongly encouraged, just leave a message below if offering or asking for a lift. We do not wait for latecomers! Meet: 10:45am for prompt 11am start.
