It is a truth not quite universally acknowledged, that a designer in possession of an ADHD brain, must be in want of a robot.
A talk, then, concerning the machines with whom I have worked, quarrelled, and, in time, grown rather fond.
Five and twenty years I have spent in the business of design: as founder and Chief Creative Officer of Equator, a digital consultancy of no small standing, and a woman of an age at which one is generally expected to regard new technology with polite suspicion, if not outright disdain. I confess I have done quite the opposite. I find myself, at this late hour, thoroughly enchanted, for I have discovered, rather to my astonishment, that I may now join design and code in a single gesture, and make things I had long supposed to be quite beyond my purview.
These past years have seen a most curious shift in my affections. What began as idle fascination has become a genuine companionship in the craft. I shall recount the particulars: the bots that surprised me, the ones that tried my patience most grievously, and those few that altered, quite permanently, the manner in which I think, work, and make.
I shall share, besides, what I have learned in daily correspondence with these peculiar creatures, and venture some observations on where matters are tending, for the sector, the craft, and the good people who labour within it. No grand pronouncements. Merely the honest notes of a woman who has been paying close attention, and remains, quite happily, a little obsessed.
