This adult and child pottery class is a relaxed fun introduction to clay. Children should be aged 5+. We will introduce you to making simple pottery projects in a relaxed and creative way, and have plenty of ideas to inspire you if you need them but you are welcome to come and make anything you like. The cost includes a two hour session for an adult and child. All materials and firing costs are included. You can choose to decorate your creations on the day with underglaze or come back for a separate glazing session. The maximum class size will be 8 students.

6 Weeks of Beginner Pottery Classes. A small class of up to 6 students, aimed at beginner level students who have little or no prior experience of pottery. We will cover the basic techniques such as pinch pots, coil pots and slab building with guided projects and once completed if you want to have a go, some throwing too. This class will help you to begin to learn the essential techniques of pottery making and if you want to take the experience further you can progress to intermediate level cl

Beginners Pottery Taster Session – Wheel Throwing

If you are new to pottery but don't know where to start / want a fun first throwing pottery experience then this is the class for you. In a small class of up to 5 students, you'll start with the preparation of clay, then following a demonstration by the tutor, you will begin your own throwing, guided and supported at all the stages. You will have a wheel each for the full length of the lesson and this gives you the ability to focus on and immerse yourself in the whole experience. As this is just a 2 hour taster session, you can make as many pots as you can manage and then you can choose your 3 best pots. The tutor will ensure they are fired ready for you to come back and glaze. If you want us to glaze them an additional fee of £10/pot will be required to be paid on the day.

Glazing Session

A class just for glazing. If you've been to a taster session and wanted to glaze your work yourself or need to catch up on glazing from weekly sessions at the Clay Half, you can do that here. With guidance from one of our experienced pottery tutors you will have a couple of hours to use our range of in house glazes and underglazes to decorate and finish your work. We then re-fire it before it's ready to collect, this is usually done within a week of the glaze class you attended.

Come and join us at the Clay Half for these 2 relaxed workshops which will give you the chance to make your own table lamp. Week 1 - Tuesday 25th August - 6.30-9pm - Make the ceramic base Week 2 - Tuesday 22nd September - 6.30-9pm - Make the lamp shade The ceramic base is made from coils/slabs of clay, guided by experienced potter Irene (Irene Hughes Pottery & Clay Half) , once you have made your lamp base it will be fired and glazed to a colour of your choice ready for you to make a coordinating lampshade with expert guidance from Jenny (Jaggy Thistle Crafts).

The Clay Half pottery class is a relaxed clay session enabling students to develop skills over as many sessions as they attend. You will be introduced to simple hand-built pottery projects, and we have plenty of ideas to inspire you if you need them but you are welcome to come and make anything you like with 1kg clay. There will also be a couple of pottery wheels out so you can have a go at that if you would like to! The cost for a two hour session includes all materials and firing costs. You will be expected to help with cleaning up your own tools and workstation and we ask that you leave the studio as you found it. You can choose to decorate your creations on the day with underglaze or come back for a separate glazing session at an additional cost or perhaps glaze them at a later Friday afternoon session once they have been bisc fired. Students attending should be at secondary school / aged 12-18, the maximum class size will be 6 students. Book 4 or more separate sessions and you'll receive a 10% discount on checkout.

The Mud Club is the Clay Half pottery class for Secondary School aged kids - It will be a relaxed fun clay session. Suitable for anyone aged 12-18 years. We will introduce throwing pottery, with a short demonstration of the steps involved in throwing on the wheel and then guide the students through each step while they try it out. The cost for a session includes all materials and firing costs. Book for 2 or more people per class or 2 or more separate Mud Club sessions and you'll receive a 20% discount on checkout. You can choose to decorate your creations on the day with underglaze or come back for a separate glazing session and take more time to glaze your bisque fired work at an additional cost. The maximum class size will be 6 students.

Spoon Rest & Utensil Holder

At our Pottery and prosecco class, two tutors will help you achieve the planned project of a utensil holder and spoon rest, made using slabs of clay. We'll welcome you with a glass of prosecco/non-alcholic alternative but if you prefer you can bring your own choice of drink. Everything to make your pottery project is provided in our well equipped little studio. Guided by experienced potters we will lead you through a relaxed evening of pottery.

You are welcome to bring a drawing or picture, but you can make anything you like (within reason!) using hand building techniques, pinch pots, slab building and coil pots. We're away for a lovely weekend with potters... every year the Scottish Pottery Association holds their AGM at a gathering of over 100 members.

Summer Celebration of Student Work and Open Studio Event

Student work will be on show and for sale, if you've ever wondered what we do pop in to find out, have a go and chat to our tutors and students ! If you'd like to have a wee play with clay there will be a wheel out and a hand building station, so you can have a go - not intended for making and keeping, all work made will be put into the recycling buckets ... No booking required, just pop in - open 10am - 4pm Wednesday 12th to Saturday 15th August

Weekly Pottery Class

Taking your Hand Building or Wheel Throwing further. These are our pottery classes for students with some experience. An experienced tutor is there to teach, support and supervise all students whilst they work on their own projects. A level of self-led working is expected and necessary, but you have support and guidance on hand in planning and carrying out your projects when needed. NOTE : The individual cost per class is reduced the more you book at once (4-7 weekly classes = 5% discount; 8+ = 10% discount) automatically applied at checkout or u can buy a class pass which gives you more flexibility with your dates. This applies to Weekly Wednesday/Thursday classes only. This is a small class of 6 maximum, intended to enable you to use the skills you have gained at a beginner/intermediate block of classes or multiple taster sessions and take them further, making your own projects with guidance on most suitable techniques from the tutor. You can choose to attend any number of sessions, but we recommend at least a couple so that you can make and glaze or throw and turn your pots, developing your pottery skills is all about regular practice so the more the better and regular attendance will develop your technique, so come for a few weeks, months or even years it's up to you!
