The Mayfield Mooch

Sat
📅 20 Jun 2026
📍 M11 4DQ

Following text taken from the Mayfield Park website: Mayfield Park is a place for all, whether you want to relax, play, or explore. A public 6.5-acre park, with 142 trees, 120,000 shrubs and plants. The park features a kids’ play yard with 6 slides woven around the newly daylighted River Medlock – one of Manchester’s founding rivers. Group Summary City Centre based low level walking group using Mayfield Park as a base. Further information I was inspired to start this group through: Getting older Having struggles with my Mental Health The feeling of isolation I get from modern life If you can empathise with any of the above - please come along to the walks! If you can't empathise with any of the above - please come along to the walks! Two songs that have inspired me to start the group are: Bette Midler - Hello in There and Raye (feat. Hans Zimmer) - Click Clack Symphony The first song focuses on loneliness in aging but, in my opinion, the sentiment can be applied to all of us. The second is very much about having a support system in place to get you 'out of the house'; if you are in a place where you can do so! Hosts The Mayfield Mooch is open to everyone. I am looking for co-hosts to make people feel welcome at the walks - please drop me a direct message if you are interested in hosting. Walking Talking Topics Each walk will have a 'Walking Talking Topic' - a conversation starter that can also get the chat going online before we meet. Things to know before joining The Mayfield Mooch The Mayfield Mooch is in no way affiliated to Mayfield Park. Walks are undertaken at your own risk. We will take pictures at events - if you do not wish to be included in any pictures please let one of the hosts (identifiable by their 'Hello, my name is' badge) know. * Smoking / vaping / consumptio

Macclesfield Marauders

Tucked in between the northern industrial powerhouses of Bury and Ramsbottom, Burrs Country Park is a little gem of a place, in a region full of hidden treasures. A few other lesser-known Lancashire sights on this outing include the Lumb Mill and Deep Vale Mill ruins secreted in the Cheesden Valley, as well as the Irwell Sculpture Trail and the Valley View Tea Pod with its cute little alpaca farm. It might be a little early in the year, but if we're lucky we might also spot a few patches of bluebells in the woods. A couple of smallish hills to contend with on this one. Nothing too taxing for your average Marauder. There's a café with toilets at the start point, and a pub at the end for refreshments. Meeting point 9:45 am outside The Lamppost café in Burrs County Park. The café opens at 9am so arrive early if you want a cuppa before the walk. Parking It's free parking at Burrs Country Park. Public Transport The number 477 Bee Network bus (towards Ramsbottom) stops at Crow Woods/March Drive near the park. Dogs Well behaved dogs are welcome on the hike and in the pub afterwards. What to bring Please bring a packed lunch, water and appropriate clothing/footwear for the weather. DISCLAIMER** • All Macclesfield Marauder walks are free of charge. You only need to organise your own travel, food and drink expenses. • It's your own responsibility to remain safe outdoors. This group does not employ professional organisers nor first aiders. • Walks are usually between 10 and 15 miles and vary in difficulty, with a good level of hiking experience required for the harder walks. • We usually stop for a packed lunch and pop in to a country pub for a post or mid-hike drink. • If you're on the waitlist, please wait to be moved to the going list before attending the event. But note, a lot of people tend to drop off the night before an event, so if you're near the top of the waitlist then it's likely you'll be automatically moved onto th

Join us for our Beltane Gathering - As we bring in new energy with the Sun - the half way celebration between Spring & Summer. On the 1st weekend in May on the Sacred land at the Stone Circle in Lowton. We will meet close to the entrance of Byrom Hall Woods (check event location) - here we have about a 20 minute walk and talk getting to know each other through beautiful woodlands. At the Stone Circle we will take time to be present & mindful connecting with the Earth & ourselves with a grounding (earthing) exercise by putting our feet on the grass (all is optional of course - however, grounding/earthing has many proven health benefits). There will be time to reflect since the equinox and let go of anything no longer serving - setting any new intensions or goals for the next season cycle. Bringing a journal and pen is recommended for any ideas/thoughts that you want to make note of. There will be an option to share vulnerably to the group anything that is going on - giving chance to get to know each other past any small talk - all completely optional. On the walk back we will complete the circuit of Byrom Hall Woods taking about 30 minutes to walk back to the meet point. An optional drink at Blossom Bistro (5 minute drive away) to end the Meetup or leave after the walk those needing to get back. There was recently small patches of mud to get to the Stone Circle, this should have dried now but wear suitable walking footwear. So looking forward to meeting some of you! Evie XXX

It's time for the inaugural mooch! The Walking Talking Topic this time around is: Television shows Have a think about your: All time favourite show Current obsession Guilty pleasure Post in the event discussion or chat about all things television on the walk! We will be meeting at 11AM, Monday 4th May by the MCR sign at Piccadilly Station (Fairfield Street entrance) - see event pic. We will head over to Mayfield Park from there. The plan is to have a slow walk around the park (we'll do a few loops as it's not a massive park). Afterwards, we can do a coffee if there is interest. The hosts for the walk are Brenda and myself (Michael). I will be quiet hosting - if anyone wants to attend / come along and be social but not necessarily talk to a lot of people - I got you! Any questions before the date of the event, please shout!

Join us for a fantastic moorland adventure packed with big views, iconic landmarks, and a rich slice of local history. We begin at the White House Inn, a historic hilltop pub perched on the old Lancashire–Yorkshire boundary. From here, we head out onto the open moors, passing the scenic Blackstone Edge Reservoir. These reservoirs were constructed during the Industrial Revolution to supply water to the booming textile mills of the region. We continue onwards to the remote Warland Reservoir, surrounded by classic Pennine landscape. From here, we join the famous Pennine Way, following it across the high moors towards the iconic Stoodley Pike. Standing at over 1,300 feet above sea level, Stoodley Pike dominates the skyline for miles around. The current monument dates from 1856 (after the original collapsed) and commemorates the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The views from here, weather permitting, are some of the best in the South Pennines. We then descend into the hillside village of Lumbutts, once a busy mill settlement during the height of the textile era. From Lumbutts, we pick up the Pennine Bridleway, crossing the historic Rochdale Canal. Opened in 1804, the canal was a vital transport route linking Manchester with Yorkshire. A key highlight of this section is walking above the Summit Tunnel. Opened in 1841, this is a railway tunnel (not a canal tunnel), carrying the Manchester to Leeds line beneath the moors. At the time of its construction, it was one of the longest railway tunnels in the world and remains an impressive feat of Victorian engineering. After crossing back over the canal, we visit the lovely Animals in Distress Field of Dreams, where we may see donkeys and ponies enjoying their peaceful surroundings. Finally, we climb back up to the White House Inn, completing a rewarding circular route through some of the finest Pennine scenery. Walk details: • Distance: Approx. 13 miles • Terrain: Moorland paths, tracks, and some uneven sections • Difficult

Join an exclusive club to reach the summit of all mountains in Wales above 3,000ft in a single weekend. Replacing our every popular National 3-Peaks Challenge (As a part of our mission to organise environmentally sustainable mountain adventures, we aim to minimise traffic congestion and road pollution) we introduce to you the Welsh 3000ers Challenge! This is a tough challenge that is aimed at people with good mountain fitness. This trip is limited to a small group of just 2 people, supported by 2 qualified and experienced guides. Starting on Snowdon in the morning, you’ll traverse the mighty Crib Goch ridge before descending to your campsite for the night. On day two you will head up and over the Glyderau range, reaching the summit of the highest peaks (including the mighty Tryfan!) before descending to your second campsite for a night of rest (your kit will be trasferred to the next campsite for you, so you wont need to carry heavy packs) Waking up early on day 3, you will hike up a ridge to the summit of Pen yr Ole Wen before continuing along the Carneddau plateau. The challenge is complete when you reach the summit of Foel Fras followed by a descent to the valley floor. You will then return to the campsite for a well earned rest and a shower before heading to a local pub for a celebratory dinner. As always, we’ll sort out the travel, accommodation and most of the food (the pubs can do the rest!) so just meet in London and leave the rest to us. ---------------------------------------------------- ITINERARY Saturday (from 8am) Meet outside Manchester Piccadilly railway station and take a relaxing train journey to north Wales where you will be met by your guide. Most rides will be beginner-friendly to moderate, with the route difficulty, distance, surface type, meeting point, and bike suitability clearly shared before each event. We usually plan to ride every second weekend, either Saturday or Sunday, depending on the route, weather, and group availability. We may also organise rides on bank holidays and other days off.
